Sports medicine reviews keep landing on the same core cause: most running injuries come from overuse and overtraining. Tissue breaks down when loading outpaces recovery. One review pegged yearly injury rates for recreational runners as high as the mid-50s percent, and even higher during marathon prep. A broader synthesis found more than one in four runners suffered an injury, with the burden far worse in competitive groups. The mechanism sounds complex, but the fix starts simple: enough easy work and enough rest between stressors.

Qualitative research echoes this on-the-ground truth. Runners and coaches describe excessive loading and weak recovery habits as the drivers that turn normal training stress into breakdown. That includes stacking hard days, adding speed without base, and cutting sleep to “fit it in.” The pattern is boring, but it is how most seasons go sideways: not one wild act, but repeated choices that favor volume, pace, or pride over patience.

But the goal is not “do less” for its own sake

Performance demands stress. Smart stress wins. Evidence from ultramarathon preparation shows that very low weekly mileage and a lopsided acute-to-chronic balance also raised injury or illness risk. Runners who kept their short-term load within a steady band relative to their base did better. Those who lived at the extremes did worse. That argues for a sweet spot, not for fear of training. The load ratio guidance there fell roughly between one-half and one-and-a-half for best odds in the next week.

So where does this leave the everyday runner who wants to get faster? Treat your long run like a contract, not a dare. Keep single-session distance within your recent fence. Build the fence higher a little at a time. Bank most miles at an easy effort so your tendons and bones adapt while your heart gets fitter. Put your hard days on rails: warm up, focus, cool down, and quit while your stride still looks clean. Then protect sleep like equipment.

How this aligns with coaching

Coaches often warn that athletes run easy days too fast, mix workouts without rest, and chase weekly numbers like a scoreboard. The new cohort data supports their gut-level rule: consistency beats surges. Acute spikes cost more than they seem to. That also fits conservative values most runners share outside sport. You would not spend your retirement fund in one weekend. You would not remodel the house without a plan. You should not bet your season on a run that breaks your pattern.

One caveat matters. The literature is not uniform on every metric for load change. Some reviews show limited links for weekly ratios, while the single-session pattern stands out more clearly in the latest cohort. Most of the evidence is observational, so it connects dots rather than proves cause. Still, the safest, strongest through-line lands in the same place your legs already know: progress comes from small steps, repeated often, not from one big leap.
